I'm sure you've seen ads and others like this all over the internet and a lot of people, especially those who suffer from a fairly normal human condition called curiosity get taken in by these promises and eagerly await the money to start pouring in all on it's own accord. Now in reality, we know this is unlikely to happen, however when it comes to affiliate marketing our sensible thought processes often seem to disappear. There is always that small ray of hope when you think, perhaps this is the one!

This is the probably the biggest pitfall standing in the way of most people when they first commence in affiliate marketing. Many newbies have fallen victim to those who are promoting these programs quite successfully. It is often not until some time down the track that reality does seems to strike and you realise that you are NOT in fact making anything close to the absurd amounts of money you were promised and yet they made it seem so easy, didn't they?

Really it's no wonder we get sucked in. What with the very believable testimonials, the wonderful commission structures, the fellow marketers who endorse each others products and the incredible proof of earnings pages that are offered as living proof that 'anybody' can earn these wonderful sums of money. What's more all you have to do is to promote your site, tell everyone you know and very soon they will be making their way to your sites and purchasing your products. It all seems so very easy doesn't it?

Hmmm….I think not!

Many newcomers to affiliate marketing think that the more programs/products they are promoting the better the chance that they will succeed. So they go and join every program they are attracted to or that lands in their inbox, spending untold amounts of money, whilst hoping against hope that this is IT ! Unfortunately for most people this strategy rarely, if ever actually works. The marketer's time is spread too thin over too many programs and they cannot spend enough quality time getting things set up properly, before moving onto the next one. The end result being that you become increasingly frustrated and concerned about the lack of income you are generating whilst you are spending so much time and money without much if any progress.

It is an important process for newbie marketers to learn the skill of patience and to be able to focus on one product at a time. In fact affiliate marketing is probably no different than any other offline type of business you may get involved in. The same criteria applies, but for some reason when it's on the internet we nearly always fail to apply normal, everyday principles.

Research the market you're selling into and review all the promotional opportunities available, check out the competition and see how they are marketing their business. Yes, of course, it does take time, but due diligence in the beginning can save a lot of heartache in the end. It's also a good idea to actually try, buy or use the product you're intending to sell. You will always come across more sincere and knowledgable if you have 1st hand experience of your product.

By this stage you're likely to be thinking, well, how do these 'gurus' and other big name marketers do it? It always looks easy when they do it. But, everyone one of them have had to go through the same process and learnt the best ways to market. They have learnt from their mistakes and have put into place strategies that will now ensure their success.

So, it begs the question; can you really become a successful affiliate marketer and will I ever earn the type of income that appears to be so readily available and for which you long for so much?

Yes, you most certainly can, BUT….

If you are just starting out, it is advisable to try and focus on one product at a time. Take it step by step from set up through to the marketing and then the conversion. Be prepared to be patient. This can potentially take some time.

Learn techniques that will help you write better. Your ads and websites are your shop front. If they're inviting, people will want to come in and if they're boring or dull, then your potential customers will be turned away. It is one of the more important things you will be required to do to ensure your success. When you choose a product to promote, research it well and have confidence in it. Your customers will pick up on your belief in your product and this will engender a similar belief in them as well. By doing this your credibility will rise and you will begin to build a reputation for promoting high quality products and your customers are more likely to return to you for other products.
